Volunteering to drive his girl friend’s son home for Thanksgiving to Chicago from his boarding school in Georgia, little does Dutch expect the picaresque adventures in store for him. When a blunt, down-to-earth construction worker takes to the road with an insufferable twelve-year-old snob (desperately insecure under the surface) who doesn’t approve of him in the least, quite a bit must happen before they can reach their destination as friends– or, for that matter, get home at all.
故事梗概：
和丈夫離婚後，娜塔麗認識瞭卡車司機達奇。假期馬上就要到瞭，由於娜塔麗的前夫瑞德要到倫敦開會，娜塔麗決定由達奇到千裡之外的寄宿學校接兒子道爾回傢。
道爾聰明、身手敏捷，但卻有些自閉。對於父親不能來接自己回傢，道爾感到很沮喪。但他寧願一個人呆在空蕩蕩的學校裡，也不願意和一個卡車司機回傢。
達奇剛到學校道爾就給瞭他一個下馬威。道爾用空手道將達奇掀翻在地，這下可惹惱瞭達奇，他強行將道爾帶到車上，向傢的方向開去。
為瞭完成女友交給的任務，和道爾和睦相處，達奇想出很多辦法。他買來焰火逗道爾開心，但道爾卻並不領情，還用煙頭燒壞瞭達奇的褲子。達奇一怒之下把道爾仍在瞭路邊，獨自開車來到瞭汽車旅館。
饑寒交迫的道爾找到瞭達奇，為瞭報復他，道爾打著瞭汽車並開上瞭路。一輛卡車將達奇的車撞得面目全非，看著達奇在報廢的汽車周圍焦急地尋找自己，道爾心中閃過一絲愧疚。
汽車沒有瞭，道爾和達奇隻能搭車回傢。在達奇的啟發下，道爾裝成患病兒童，博得瞭兩位女士的同情。但上車之後他們才發現這兩位女士竟是應召女郎。情竇初開的道爾對她們其中的一個頗有好感，但達奇知道決不能再和這兩個女人坐一輛車，這將給道爾造成很不好的影響。
應召女郎趁給車加油拋下瞭達奇和道爾，卻帶走瞭他們的行李錢物。這下達奇和道爾身無分文，要回傢真成瞭大難題。無奈之下兩人來到瞭收容所，在這裡的人們的幫助下，才回到瞭傢中。
經歷瞭這一路的風風雨雨，道爾接受瞭達奇，甚至發現自己已經離不開他瞭。道爾相信他將和達奇一同度過一個美好的假期。
